Poor nutrition status is a major predictor of skin breakdown. And for those who are already dealing with a skin injury, nutrition plays an important role in the healing process. The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel does not recommend routine vitamin and mineral supplementation to treat pressure injuries, unless a deficiency is documented or suspected. This may be contradictory to what may dietitians currently recommend or practice. Susan is your long-time client. She is a pleasant woman in her fifties. One day she comes to see you and tells you that about eight months ago, she made the difficult decision to admit her mother to a nursing home.
The purpose of this study will be to 1 determine the risk factors for pressure ulcer development among patients in the pediatric intensive care units in a resource limited hospital and 2 to develop a regulatory protocol to help minimize these risk factors in at-risk patients in Hanoi, Vietnam. This pilot study of 12 patients 6 control, 6 experimental will test the safety and efficacy of applying autologous, adipose-derived stromal cells ASCs , uncultured, on a Stage III or IV pressure ulcer. Patients in both groups would undergo a minimal risk liposuction procedure to withdraw cc of adipose tissue. The tissue would be processed to extract the stromal layer of cells that contain stem cells. The ASCs would be injected into a fibrin sealant to be applied to the wound.
