Reading different blogs it has come to my attention that case studies are getting quite a bad reputation. They are being deemed non-scientific and of questionable usefulness. In this blog I will look at both sides of the argument for case studies and see whether as a design it is still useful for the field of psychology. Case studies also tend to collect mainly qualitative data. I have put this as neither an advantage or disadvantage of case studies, as this depends on your stance on qualitative data.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Case Study Research – darma.info
Using selected examples from within the International Relations literature, this paper aims to provide a brief overview of the main principles and distinctive advantages and limitations of single case study analysis. Divided into three inter-related sections, the paper therefore begins by first identifying the underlying principles that serve to constitute the case study as a particular research strategy, noting the somewhat contested nature of the approach in ontological, epistemological, and methodological terms. The final section of the paper then discusses the most commonly articulated limitations of single case studies; while accepting their susceptibility to criticism, it is however suggested that such weaknesses are somewhat exaggerated. The paper concludes that single case study analysis has a great deal to offer as a means of both understanding and explaining contemporary international relations. It is possible, however, to distil some of the more commonly-agreed principles. As such, three key points can be derived from this — respectively concerning issues of ontology, epistemology, and methodology — that are central to the principles of single case study research. It is important to note, however, that — whereas Gerring refers to a single unit of analysis — it may be that attention also necessarily be given to particular sub-units.

The case study is one of the kinds of research approach, and it is used all over the world to obtain accurate results concerning various projects. Apart from that, case studies are an effective way to find out all the details and features of the particular business, product, system, or service. However, there is a famous proverb that accurately describes the meaning of the case study — what you gain in depth you lose in breadth. In this manner, during the research, one may face some case study advantages and disadvantages. It should be noted that even though the case study may have some drawbacks, it also brings crucial information on how the implementation of something works, and that may serve as a benefit.
The experimental research method is probably the most innovative among other methods of research. There is a range of approaches to the process. The most common are the methods of qualitative and quantitative approaches.
