It's smug and cutesy. But wait! After that grim, unfunny fake-out, the film resets and genuinely begins. The film is divided into chapters ooh, serious! The narration is still overly precious, but now it's handled by Lorenza Izzo.
Life Can Be A Mess, But So Is 'Life Itself'
Like Life Itself, ‘Life Itself’ Is Good In Theory, But Bad In Reality
Genre: Drama Premise: from The Black List A multigenerational love story that weaves together a number of characters whose lives intersect over the course of decades from the streets of New York to the Spanish countryside and back. Fogelman will direct. Writer: Dan Fogelman Details: pages. Dan Fogelman is one of the biggest screenwriting success stories of the past decade. He came out of nowhere five years ago to sell three huge specs at a time when everyone thought the giant spec sale was dead. Things looked bad when one of his biggest sales, Danny Collins, however, failed badly at the box office. It was looking like Fogelman was in trouble.
Screenplay Review – Life Itself
The rambling "Life Itself" is a multigenerational drama about the messiness of life, but the emotional impact of the movie gets lost in the messiness of its screenplay. And though there is not one subpar acting performance, the film itself comes off as an exercise in self-consciousness. Writer-director Dan Fogelman, behind the heartfelt TV show "This Is Us," tries to mix elements of his hit series — a sprawling family, time shifts and sentimentalism — with overwrought nods to "Pulp Fiction," Bob Dylan tunes and writerly musings about unreliable narrators. It's an ambitious film, but unfortunately, an unqualified misfire.
