The single chapter in As I Lay Dying where Moseley becomes the narrative focalizer, is anomalous because the focalizer is a character that had not yet been mentioned, and is never mentioned again. The general pattern in the novel is that each One of William Faulkner's most celebrated qualities is his inventiveness. As I Lay Dying has fifteen unique narrators, one of them a dead woman, and the novel avoids traditional ideas of linear and chronological structure.

In Faulkner moved to New Orleans and worked as a journalist, where he met the American Sherwood Andersen, a famous short-story writer. After a trip to Europe, Faulkner began to write about the fictitious Yoknapatawpha County, which was representative of Lafayette County, Mississippi. In both stories,the reasoning behind these dreadful situations tie back to the missing mother. With the mother not there for Goneril or Ginny, they never learned what they should do and not do. The sound and the fury it does two things, it plays upon the minds of the characters with the stream of consciousness of benjy, Quentin, and Jason. In the novel as I lay dying, this sort of stream of consciousness is about the only stylistic continuity between all fifteen narrators of As I Lay Dying.
