The Holderness Coast is located on the east coast of England. It extends 61km from Flamborough in the north to Spurn Point in the south. This is around 2 million tonnes of material every year. These are shown on the map below. Underlying the Holderness Coast is bedrock made up of Cretaceous Chalk. However, in most places, this is covered by glacial till deposited over 18, years ago.

Cliff recession and landsliding present significant problems to many communities on the coast of Great Britain. Occasional injuries and deaths due to cliff falls and the cumulative loss of land, cliff top properties and infrastructure are problems that have long been experienced on unprotected clifflines, especially on the east and south coast of England. Although individual failures generally tend to cause only small amounts of cliff retreat, the cumulative effects can be dramatic. On parts of the north Norfolk coast there has been over m of recession since Cliff recession can be an intermittent process, with long periods of little or no erosion separated by rapid and occasionally dramatic landslides, which may remove large sections of cliff in a single event. Major failures are a feature of the till cliffs of north east England. At Scarborough, a series of large slides have occurred on the South Bay cliffs.
